A5 Tactical: Product Details & Ownership Guide

The Vaer A5 Tactical is a 40mm automatic field watch that combines military-inspired design, ocean-ready durability, ultra-slim proportions, and full USA assembly. Distinguished by its matte black PVD case and high-output green C3 lume, the A5 Tactical represents Vaer’s most performance-driven automatic field platform.

This guide covers essential operation and handling for all A5 Tactical models. For deeper technical detail on mechanical movements, servicing intervals, and long-term care, refer to Vaer’s full Mechanical Watch Care & Handling Guide.

1. Purpose & Design Overview (A5 Tactical Collection)

The A5 Tactical is the automatic evolution of the C5 Tactical. Its design pays homage to military history while advancing Vaer’s modern field aesthetic.

The dial draws inspiration from the WWII-era A-11 field watch worn by American servicemen, featuring prominent Arabic numerals, subtle 24-hour inner markings, and 60-minute outer markers.

The A5 Tactical is also one of Vaer’s first models to feature a matte black PVD case finish and green-tinted C3 Super-LumiNova, giving it exceptional nighttime legibility.

Case specifications:

  • 40mm case diameter
  • 48mm lug-to-lug
  • 10.4mm thickness
  • 20mm lug width
  • Approx. 74g case weight
  • 316L stainless steel with matte black PVD coating
  • Single-domed sapphire crystal with AR coating

The 40mm case provides a medium wrist presence and is recommended for wrists approximately 6.5”–8.5”. Despite its tactical orientation, the case remains slim, lightweight, and ergonomic for extended outdoor wear.

2. Movement & Assembly (Miyota 9015)

The A5 Tactical is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic (self-winding) movement.

  • 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz)
  • 42-hour power reserve
  • 24 jewels
  • Regulated to approximately -5/+15 seconds per day
  • Assembled in the United States

The movement winds automatically through daily wrist motion. If not worn for more than its 42-hour power reserve, it can be manually wound.

Manual Winding

  1. Ensure the crown is fully screwed down.
  2. Unscrew the crown counterclockwise.
  3. Wind clockwise 20–30 turns.
  4. Push inward and screw down securely.

3. Water Resistance & Crown Operation

The A5 Tactical is rated to 10 ATM / 100 meters of water resistance.

This rating is suitable for:

  • Rain and snow
  • Showering
  • Swimming and surface water exposure

The watch uses a locking screw-down crown to maintain water resistance.

To secure the crown:

  1. Press gently toward the case
  2. Rotate clockwise until snug
  3. Do not overtighten

Important: Never expose the watch to water unless the crown is fully screwed down. Proper crown use is required for warranty coverage.

4. Setting the Time and Date

The A5 Tactical includes a date window and hacking seconds for precise time setting.

  1. Unscrew the crown counterclockwise.
  2. Pull to the first click to adjust the date.
  3. Pull to the second click to adjust time (seconds hand stops).
  4. Rotate to set correct time.
  5. Push inward and screw down securely.

Date adjustment note: Avoid adjusting the date between approximately 2:00 AM and 10:00 PM to prevent damage to the date-change mechanism.

5. Dial, Markers & Lume

The A5 Tactical features a matte black dial with green-tinted Arabic numerals and 24-hour markers.

  • Vaer Lume Performance Rating: 9/10
  • 25 layers of C3 Super-LumiNova on dial
  • C3 lume on hour, minute, and second hands
  • Date window
  • Prominent Arabic hour numerals
  • Subtle 24-hour and 60-minute markers

The use of C3 Super-LumiNova provides one of the strongest nighttime glows in the Vaer lineup.

6. Sapphire Crystal & Case Construction

The A5 Tactical uses a single-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating for enhanced clarity and scratch resistance.

Sapphire measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and offers strong resistance to everyday abrasion.

The matte black PVD coating provides increased surface hardness and a non-reflective tactical appearance.

The case profile is rounded and ergonomic for comfort during active use such as hiking, surfing, mountain biking, or travel.

7. Straps & Bracelet Compatibility

The A5 Tactical uses 20mm interchangeable straps and is compatible with all Vaer straps.

  • Rubber straps
  • Nylon straps
  • Leather straps
  • Custom-fit stainless steel bracelet

Standard straps fit wrists approximately 6.4”–8.5”, with specialty sizing options available.

8. Shock, Magnetism & Serviceability

The Miyota 9015 is a durable automatic movement well suited to everyday wear.

  • Avoid hard drops onto stone or concrete
  • Avoid repeated heavy impacts
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to strong magnetic fields

As a mechanical watch, periodic servicing is recommended over the long term to maintain lubrication, accuracy, and seal integrity.

9. Long-Term Ownership Philosophy

The A5 Tactical is built for those seeking a premium automatic tool watch that can transition from field use to everyday wear. Its combination of slim mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, tactical finishing, 100m water resistance, and full USA assembly places it in a category typically reserved for watches far above its price range.

The A5 Tactical includes a 2-year guaranteed waterproof warranty.

With sensible care and periodic servicing, the Miyota 9015 movement can provide multi-decade service life.
