The Vaer A5 Atlas is a 38mm automatic field watch that balances traditional proportions with modern durability and full USA assembly. Elegant yet rugged, slim yet capable, the A5 is designed as an everyday mechanical watch with specifications that rival timepieces far above its price category.
This guide covers essential operation and handling for all A5 Atlas models. For deeper technical detail on mechanical movements, servicing intervals, and long-term care, refer to Vaer’s full Mechanical Watch Care & Handling Guide.
1. Purpose & Design Overview (A5 Atlas Collection)
The A5 Atlas represents Vaer’s vision of a modern everyday field watch—simultaneously traditional and contemporary. It combines classic sizing and polished dial detailing with durable construction and American assembly.
Case specifications:
- 38mm case diameter
- 45mm lug-to-lug
- 11mm thickness
- 20mm lug width
- Approximately 60g case weight
- 316L stainless steel case
- Ledge sapphire crystal with AR coating
The 38mm case provides a small-to-medium wrist presence and is recommended for wrists approximately 6.5”–8.0”. The case profile is slim, rounded, and ergonomic for extended outdoor wear while maintaining a refined aesthetic.
2. Movement & Assembly (Miyota 9015)
The A5 Atlas is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic (self-winding) movement.
- 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz)
- 42-hour power reserve
- 24 jewels
- Regulated to approximately -5/+15 seconds per day
- Assembled in the United States
The movement winds automatically through wrist motion. If the watch has not been worn for longer than its 42-hour reserve and has stopped, it may be manually wound.
Manual Winding
- Ensure the crown is fully screwed down.
- Unscrew the crown counterclockwise.
- Wind clockwise 20–30 turns.
- Push inward and screw down securely.
3. Water Resistance & Crown Operation
The A5 Atlas is rated to 10 ATM / 100 meters of water resistance.
This rating is suitable for:
- Rain and snow
- Hand washing and showering
- Swimming and surface water exposure
The A5 uses a locking screw-down crown to maintain water resistance.
To secure the crown:
- Press gently toward the case
- Rotate clockwise until snug
- Do not overtighten
Important: Never expose the watch to water unless the crown is fully screwed down. Proper crown use is required for warranty coverage.
4. Setting the Time and Date
The A5 Atlas includes a date window and hacking seconds for precise time setting.
- Unscrew the crown counterclockwise.
- Pull to the first click to adjust the date.
- Pull to the second click to adjust time (seconds hand stops).
- Rotate to set correct time.
- Push inward and screw down securely.
Date adjustment note: Avoid adjusting the date between approximately 2:00 AM and 10:00 PM to prevent damage to the date-change mechanism.
5. Dial, Markers & Lume
The A5 features a green sunburst dial with polished applied markers filled with BGW9 Super-LumiNova.
- Vaer Lume Performance Rating: 6/10
- BGW9 lume on dial markers
- BGW9 lume on hour, minute, and second hands
- 24-hour inner markers for quick military-time reference
- Date window at 6 o’clock
The combination of polished indices and subtle 24-hour markers allows the watch to bridge field-watch utility and everyday refinement.
6. Sapphire Crystal & Case Construction
The A5 uses a ledge sapphire crystal with anti-reflective (AR) coating for enhanced clarity and scratch resistance.
Sapphire measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and provides excellent resistance to daily abrasion.
The case is constructed from 316L stainless steel and shaped with rounded, ergonomic edges for comfort during active use such as hiking, surfing, or cycling.
7. Straps & Bracelet Compatibility
The A5 uses 20mm interchangeable straps and is compatible with all Vaer straps.
- Rubber straps
- Nylon straps
- Leather straps
- Custom-fit stainless steel bracelet
Standard straps fit wrists approximately 6.4”–8.5”, with specialty sizing options available.
8. Shock, Magnetism & Serviceability
The Miyota 9015 is a durable automatic movement well-suited to daily wear.
- Avoid hard drops onto stone or concrete
- Avoid repeated heavy impacts
- Avoid prolonged exposure to strong magnetic fields
As a mechanical watch, periodic servicing is recommended over the long term to maintain lubrication, accuracy, and seal integrity.
9. Long-Term Ownership Philosophy
The A5 Atlas is designed as a humble everyday wearer with premium mechanical specifications. Its balance of slim proportions, automatic movement, sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, and full USA assembly distinguishes it from most watches in its category.
With sensible care and periodic servicing, the Miyota 9015 movement can provide multi-decade service life.
The A5 includes a 2-year guaranteed waterproof warranty.
