The Vaer D5 is a 39mm automatic dive watch combining best-in-class durability with timeless design and full USA assembly. Powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic movement and engineered for 20ATM water resistance, the D5 represents Vaer’s refined mechanical dive platform.
This guide covers essential operation and handling for all D5 models. For deeper technical detail on mechanical movements, servicing intervals, and long-term care, refer to Vaer’s full Mechanical Watch Care & Handling Guide.
1. Purpose & Design Overview (D5 Collection)
The D5 is designed as a slim, versatile 39mm dive watch—simultaneously rugged and refined. It balances vintage proportions with modern durability and full American assembly.
Case specifications:
- 39mm case diameter
- 46mm lug-to-lug
- 11.9mm case height (12.5mm including crystal)
- 20mm lug width
- 70.6g case weight
The rounded and ergonomic case profile allows for comfort during extended wear, including activities such as swimming, surfing, or diving.
The 39mm size is recommended for wrists ranging from approximately 6.5” to 8.5”, and offers a lower-profile, vintage-inspired dive fit compared to larger 42mm platforms.
2. Movement & Assembly (Miyota 9015)
The D5 is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic (self-winding) movement.
- 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz)
- 42-hour power reserve
- 24 jewels
- Regulated to approximately -5/+15 seconds per day
- Assembled in the United States
The movement winds automatically through daily wrist motion. If the watch has not been worn for more than its 42-hour power reserve and has stopped, it can be manually wound.
Manual Winding
- Ensure the crown is fully screwed down.
- Unscrew the crown counterclockwise.
- Wind clockwise 20–30 turns.
- Push inward and screw down securely.
3. Water Resistance & Crown Operation
The D5 is rated to 20 ATM / 200 meters of water resistance.
This rating is suitable for:
- Swimming
- Surfing
- Snorkeling
- Free diving
- Recreational scuba diving within no-decompression limits
The D5 uses a screw-down crown to maintain water resistance.
To secure the crown:
- Press gently toward the case
- Rotate clockwise until snug
- Do not overtighten
Important: Never expose the watch to water unless the crown is fully screwed down. Proper crown use is required for warranty coverage.
4. Setting the Time and Date
The D5 features a date window and hacking seconds for precise time setting.
- Unscrew the crown counterclockwise.
- Pull to the first click to adjust the date.
- Pull to the second click to adjust time (seconds hand stops).
- Rotate to set correct time.
- Push inward and screw down securely.
Date adjustment note: Avoid adjusting the date between approximately 2:00 AM and 10:00 PM to prevent damage to the date-change mechanism.
5. Bezel Operation (Unidirectional Dive Bezel)
The D5 features a unidirectional rotating dive bezel.
Why unidirectional:
If the bezel is bumped underwater, it can only shorten the indicated remaining time—never extend it—adding a margin of safety.
To use:
- Align the bezel marker with the minute hand at start time.
- Read elapsed time directly against the bezel scale.
6. Dial, Lume & Crystal
The D5 dial features:
- BGW9 A-Grade lume (25 layers)
- Vaer Lume Performance Rating: 8/10
- X1 C1 lume on hour, minute, and second hands
Sapphire crystal measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale and provides excellent scratch resistance in daily use.
7. Caseback & Serviceability
The D5 uses a screw-down, gasket-sealed caseback to maintain water resistance.
As a mechanical watch, periodic servicing is recommended over the long term to maintain lubrication, accuracy, and seal integrity.
The D5 includes a 2-year guaranteed waterproof warranty.
8. Straps & Bracelet Compatibility
The D5 uses 20mm interchangeable straps and is compatible with all Vaer straps.
- Rubber straps
- Nylon straps
- Leather straps
- Custom-fit stainless steel bracelet
Straps are designed to fit wrists approximately 6.5”–8.5”, with specialty options available outside this range.
9. Long-Term Ownership Philosophy
The D5 is built for extended outdoor use while remaining slim and wearable in daily life. Its combination of mechanical durability, sapphire crystal, 200m water resistance, and full USA assembly reflects Vaer’s commitment to tool-watch longevity.
With sensible care and periodic service, the Miyota 9015 movement can provide multi-decade service life.
