G5: Product Details and Ownership Guide

G5: Product Details and Ownership Guide

The Vaer G5 is an automatic GMT tool watch designed for travel, daily wear, and long-term ownership. It combines a ceramic bi-directional bezel, sapphire crystal, 20ATM water resistance, the Miyota 9075 true GMT automatic movement, and full USA assembly.

This guide covers essential operation and handling for all G5 models. For deeper technical detail on mechanical movements, servicing, and long-term care, refer to Vaer’s full Mechanical Watch Care & Handling Guide.

1. Purpose & Design Overview (G5 Collection)

The G5 represents Vaer’s mechanical GMT platform: robust, highly legible, and engineered for real-world travel use.

Powered by the Japanese Miyota 9075 automatic true GMT movement, the G5 operates at 28,800 bph, features 24 jewels, and is regulated to an accuracy of -5/+15 seconds per day.

Case sizing within the G5 collection:

  • 39mm — balanced, versatile everyday sizing
  • 42mm — modern sport proportions with increased dial presence

Both sizes share identical construction standards, bezel architecture, movement technology, and operating principles.

2. Water Resistance & Crown Operation

The G5 is rated to 20 ATM / 200 meters of water resistance.

In real-world use, this rating is appropriate for:

  • Swimming
  • Surfing
  • Snorkeling
  • Free diving
  • Recreational scuba diving within no-decompression limits

As with all watches, water resistance depends more on crown discipline than headline depth numbers.

The G5 uses a threaded screw-down crown, which is essential to maintaining water resistance and required for warranty coverage.

To secure the crown:

  1. Press the crown gently toward the case
  2. Rotate clockwise until snug
  3. Do not overtighten

Important:

Never expose the watch to water or steam unless the crown is fully screwed down. Flooding caused by an unsecured crown is considered misuse and is not covered under warranty.

3. Setting the Time, Date & GMT (Miyota 9075)

The G5 is powered by the Miyota 9075 automatic true GMT movement with approximately 42 hours of power reserve.

To begin:

  1. Unscrew the crown by rotating it counterclockwise until it releases (Position 2).

Crown Positions:

  • Position 1 – Secured: Crown fully screwed down (normal wear / water exposure).
  • Position 2 – Manual Winding: Crown unscrewed.
  • Position 3 – Local Hour Jump & Date Adjustment: Crown pulled one click.
  • Position 4 – Time Setting: Crown pulled two clicks (hacking seconds).

Manual Winding

  1. Unscrew the crown to Position 2.
  2. Wind the crown clockwise 20–30 times.
  3. Push inward and screw down securely.

Setting the Time

  1. Unscrew the crown to Position 2.
  2. Pull to Position 4.
  3. Rotate to set hour and minute hands.

The seconds hand will stop during this adjustment.

As you rotate the time, the 24-hour GMT hand moves in sync. This is how you set your home time reference.

Push the crown inward and screw down securely once complete.

Adjusting Local Time (True GMT Functionality)

  1. Unscrew the crown to Position 2.
  2. Pull to Position 3.
  3. Rotate to jump the hour hand in one-hour increments.
  4. Advance past 12 to adjust the date if needed.
  5. Push inward and screw down securely.

The GMT hand remains fixed to home time during this adjustment.

4. GMT Bezel Operation (Tracking Multiple Time Zones)

The G5 features a bi-directional 24-hour ceramic bezel.

The watch can track up to three time zones using:

  • Local time (hour and minute hands)
  • GMT hand (24-hour hand)
  • Rotating 24-hour bezel

To track a third time zone:

  • Set the GMT hand to home time.
  • Rotate the bezel forward or backward to offset the desired time zone.
  • Read the third time zone against the bezel scale.

GMT bezels are bi-directional by design and used for reference rather than elapsed-time safety tracking.

5. Sapphire Crystal and Case Durability

The G5 uses synthetic sapphire crystal, rated 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond among watchmaking materials. This provides excellent resistance to everyday abrasion.

Sapphire is extremely hard but rigid. Sharp, concentrated impacts against stone, concrete, or metal can cause cracking or shattering.

The stainless steel case features brushed and polished surfaces. Light surface wear over time is expected and does not affect structural integrity or water resistance.

Avoid prolonged exposure to:

  • Harsh chemicals or solvents
  • Abrasive cleaning agents
  • Extreme heat (such as leaving the watch in a closed vehicle)

6. Straps, Bracelets & Strap Changes

To remove a strap:

  • Pinch the springbar where it contacts the case.
  • Pull downward to release.

To install:

  • Seat one end of the bar into the lug.
  • Compress the springbar and align the opposite side.
  • Release and confirm secure engagement.

The G5 is also compatible with Vaer single-pass nylon straps using 20mm springbars.

7. Shock, Magnetism & Temperature

Mechanical GMT movements are robust but not indestructible.

  • Avoid hard drops onto stone or concrete.
  • Avoid repeated heavy impacts.
  • Avoid prolonged close exposure to strong magnetic sources.

Extreme temperatures may affect lubrication performance and long-term seal integrity.

8. Serviceability & Long-Term Maintenance

As a mechanical watch, the G5 requires periodic servicing to maintain lubrication, accuracy, and water resistance.

Service intervals vary by usage conditions, but regular inspection of seals and gaskets is recommended over time.

The G5 uses a screw-down, gasket-sealed caseback and is designed to be serviced, resealed, and pressure-tested as needed.

Vaer offers in-house service and supports long-term ownership through its Pre-Owned Buy-Back Program.

9. Long-Term Ownership Philosophy

The G5 represents Vaer’s mechanical GMT platform: durable, serviceable, and built for sustained use.

With sensible care and periodic servicing, the Miyota 9075 automatic movement can provide multi-decade service life.
