S-Series: Product Details and Ownership Guide

The Vaer S-Series Field Watch is a rugged, everyday quartz tool watch designed for legibility, durability, and low-maintenance ownership. It is built to be worn daily, exposed to weather, and relied upon without constant adjustment or care rituals.

This quick-start guide covers the essential operation and handling of all S-Series Field Watches. For deeper technical detail on quartz movements, battery service, and long-term care, refer to Vaer’s full Quartz Watch Care & Handling Guide.

1. Purpose & Design Overview (S-Series Collection)

The S-Series Field Watch draws from classic mid-century military field-watch design: high-contrast dials, clear Arabic numerals, strong lume performance, and a restrained, highly wearable case profile.

The collection emphasizes functional clarity over decoration. These watches are intended as all-conditions daily tools—appropriate for urban wear, outdoor activity, travel, and extended exposure to water—without requiring special handling or frequent service.

Case sizing within the S-Series:

  • S3: 36mm case diameter — compact, traditional field-watch proportions
  • S5: 40mm case diameter — modern, versatile everyday sizing

Both sizes share the same design language, construction standards, and operating principles.

2. Water Resistance & Crown Operation

All S-Series Field Watches are rated to 10 ATM / 100 meters of water resistance.

In real-world use, this rating is appropriate for:

  • Rain and snow
  • Showering
  • Swimming
  • Surfing
  • Snorkeling and shallow recreational diving

Laboratory depth ratings do not perfectly map to real-world conditions, which include motion, temperature change, and repeated crown use. Maintaining water resistance depends more on crown discipline than headline depth numbers.

All Vaer watches use a screw-down crown, which is essential to water resistance and required for warranty coverage.

To secure the crown:

  1. Press the crown gently toward the case
  2. Rotate clockwise until snug
  3. Do not overtighten

Important:

Never expose the watch to water or steam unless the crown is fully screwed down. Flooding caused by an unsecured crown is considered misuse and is not covered under warranty.

After saltwater use, rinse the case and strap with fresh water to remove salt buildup around the crown and caseback.

3. Setting the Time and Date (Quartz Movement)

To set your S-Series watch:

  1. Unscrew the crown by rotating it counterclockwise until it releases
  2. Pull the crown outward

Position 1 – Date Setting (if applicable)

  • Pull the crown to the first click
  • Rotate to advance the date

Position 2 – Time Setting

  • Pull the crown to the second click
  • Rotate to set the time

Once set:

  • Push the crown fully inward
  • Screw it clockwise until snug

Important:

Only adjust the date when the time is between approximately 2:00 AM and 10:00 PM. Adjusting the date near midnight can damage the date-change mechanism.

4. Sapphire Crystal and Case Durability

S-Series Field Watches use synthetic sapphire crystal for maximum scratch resistance. Sapphire measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it second only to diamond among materials commonly used in watchmaking. In practical terms, this means sapphire resists everyday abrasion from sand, fabric, and incidental contact far better than mineral glass or acrylic.

Sapphire’s hardness comes with a tradeoff: it is rigid rather than elastic. A sufficiently sharp or concentrated impact against stone, concrete, or metal can cause cracking or shattering. Scratch resistance and impact resistance are distinct properties, and sapphire is engineered to prioritize the former.

S-Series cases are constructed from stainless steel with brushed or coated finishes. Light surface wear—particularly on brushed surfaces—will accumulate over time and is expected with regular use. These marks are cosmetic and do not affect structural integrity or water resistance.

Avoid prolonged exposure to:

  • Harsh chemicals or solvents
  • Abrasive cleaning agents
  • Extreme heat (such as leaving the watch in a closed vehicle under direct sun)

5. Straps, Bracelets, and Strap Changes

Most S-Series watches ship with pre-installed quick-release straps, allowing tool-free strap changes.

To remove a strap:

  • Pull the small metal knob on the underside of the strap to disengage the spring bar

To install:

  • Seat one end of the bar into the lug
  • Pull the knob inward
  • Align the opposite end and release

Ensure the strap piece with the buckle is installed on the 12 o’clock side of the case.

S-Series watches are also compatible with single-pass (NATO-style) straps, which install underneath the case using standard spring bars.

Strap care guidance:

  • Leather straps should not be submerged
  • Nylon and rubber straps may be rinsed with mild soap and water
  • Steel bracelets benefit from periodic cleaning with warm water and a soft brush

Always confirm the crown is fully secured before cleaning or rinsing the watch.

6. Shock, Magnetism, and Temperature

Quartz movements are robust and well-suited to daily wear, but they are not indestructible.

  • Avoid dropping the watch onto hard surfaces such as tile, stone, or concrete
  • Avoid repeated heavy impacts
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to strong magnetic fields

Quartz watches are largely immune to everyday magnetism compared to mechanical watches, but sustained close contact with strong magnetic sources should still be avoided.

Extreme temperatures can:

  • Shorten battery life
  • Accelerate gasket aging

Normal outdoor use, travel, and weather exposure are well within S-Series design tolerances.

7. Battery Life, Replacement, and Serviceability

S-Series Field Watches use silver-oxide batteries with an expected lifespan of approximately 3–5 years, depending on the specific movement and whether the watch includes a date complication.

As the battery nears depletion, you may observe:

  • Irregular seconds-hand movement
  • Intermittent stopping
  • Complete stoppage

These behaviors are normal indicators of battery depletion, not movement failure.

All Vaer quartz watches use a screw-down, gasket-sealed caseback. While battery replacement is technically possible for owners, we strongly recommend professional service to ensure:

  • Proper gasket reseating
  • Preservation of water resistance
  • Optional pressure testing after service

Vaer offers in-house battery replacement and servicing. Owners may also elect to sell their watch back after years of wear through the Pre-Owned Buy-Back Program.

The broader point is intentional: unlike most sub-$500 quartz watches, S-Series watches are designed to be serviced, resealed, and kept in use for decades.

8. Long-Term Ownership Philosophy

Quartz watches do not require routine servicing in the way mechanical watches do. Outside of periodic battery replacement and occasional gasket inspection, there is no fixed maintenance interval.

With proper care, a quality quartz movement can deliver multi-decade service life. Your S-Series Field Watch is designed to be worn, maintained, resealed, and retained—not discarded when the battery expires.

That longevity philosophy is central to Vaer’s approach to tool-watch design.
