G2: Product Details and Ownership Guide

G2: Product Details and Ownership Guide

The Vaer G2 is a premium quartz GMT tool watch designed for travel, daily wear, and long-term ownership. It combines Swiss quartz accuracy with a true 24-hour GMT hand and a bi-directional bezel, assembled in the United States to the same durability standards as Vaer’s dive and field watches.

This quick-start guide covers essential operation and handling of all G2 Quartz GMT models. For deeper technical detail on quartz movements, battery service, and long-term care, refer to Vaer’s full Quartz Watch Care & Handling Guide.

1. Purpose & Design Overview

The G2 is designed as a practical travel watch: legible, shock-resistant, and capable of tracking multiple time zones without mechanical complexity.

Unlike smart devices or fully mechanical GMTs, the G2 prioritizes reliability, accuracy, and ease of ownership. The Swiss Ronda 515.24H movement enables independent GMT tracking while retaining quartz durability and low maintenance.

Case sizing within the G2 collection:

  • 39 mm — balanced, versatile everyday sizing
  • 42 mm — modern sport proportions with increased dial presence

Both sizes share the same construction standards, bezel architecture, and operating principles.

2. Water Resistance & Crown Operation

All G2 Quartz GMT watches are rated to 15 ATM / 150 meters of water resistance.

In real-world use, this rating is appropriate for:

  • Swimming
  • Surfing
  • Snorkeling
  • Free diving
  • General water exposure during travel and outdoor use

As with all watches, water resistance depends more on crown discipline than headline depth numbers.

All Vaer watches use a screw-down crown, which is essential to maintaining water resistance and required for warranty coverage.

To secure the crown:

  1. Press the crown gently toward the case
  2. Rotate clockwise until snug
  3. Do not overtighten

Important:

Never expose the watch to water or steam unless the crown is fully screwed down. Flooding caused by an unsecured crown is considered misuse and is not covered under warranty.

After saltwater use, rinse the case, bezel, and strap with fresh water.

3. Setting the Time, Date, and GMT Hand

The G2 is powered by the Swiss Ronda 515.24H, a purpose-built quartz GMT movement with an independently adjustable 24-hour hand.

To begin:

  1. Unscrew the crown by rotating it counterclockwise until it releases.

Crown Positions

Position 1 – Secured

Crown fully screwed down (normal wear / water exposure).

Position 2 – Crown open

The crown is unscrewed, but not set in any position.

Position 3 – Date & GMT Hand Setting

Pull the crown to the first click.

  • Rotate the crown clockwise → advances the date
  • Rotate the crown counter-clockwise → moves the GMT hand in one-hour increments

This allows the GMT hand to be adjusted independently without stopping the watch.

Position 4 – Time Setting

Pull the crown to the second click.

  • Rotate to set the local time (hour and minute hands)
  • The seconds hand will stop during this adjustment

Once set:

  • Push the crown fully inward
  • Screw it clockwise until snug

Important:

Only adjust the date when the time is between approximately 2:00 AM and 10:00 PM to avoid damaging the date-change mechanism.

4. GMT Hand & Bezel Operation (Tracking Multiple Time Zones)

The G2 can track up to three time zones using:

  • Local time (hour and minute hands)
  • GMT hand (24-hour hand)
  • Rotating 24-hour bezel

GMT Hand (24-Hour Hand)

  • The GMT hand completes one full rotation every 24 hours
  • It is read against a 24-hour scale (either the dial or bezel)
  • It is commonly set to home time or UTC

Because it is independently adjustable, changing local time does not affect the GMT reference.

Bi-Directional GMT Bezel

The G2 features a bi-directional rotating bezel, available in stainless steel or anodized aluminum.

To use:

  • Align the bezel’s 24-hour scale with the GMT hand to read a second time zone
  • Rotate the bezel forward or backward to offset the GMT hand and track an additional time zone

Unlike dive bezels, GMT bezels are bi-directional by design, as they are used for reference rather than elapsed-time safety tracking.

5. Sapphire Crystal and Case Durability

G2 watches use synthetic sapphire crystal, measuring 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond among watchmaking materials. This provides excellent resistance to everyday abrasion.

Sapphire is extremely hard but rigid. Sharp or concentrated impacts against stone, concrete, or metal can cause cracking or shattering.

Cases are stainless steel with brushed or coated finishes. Light surface wear is expected over time and does not affect water resistance or structural integrity.

Avoid prolonged exposure to:

  • Harsh chemicals or solvents
  • Abrasive cleaning agents
  • Extreme heat (such as closed vehicles in direct sun)

6. Straps, Bracelets, and Strap Changes

Most G2 watches ship with quick-release straps for tool-free changes.

To remove:

  • Pull the small metal knob on the underside of the strap to disengage the spring bar

To install:

  • Seat one end of the bar into the lug
  • Pull the knob inward
  • Align the opposite end and release

Ensure the strap with the buckle is installed on the 12 o’clock side of the case.

G2 watches are compatible with rubber straps, steel bracelets, and single-pass (NATO-style) straps.

Always confirm the crown is fully secured before rinsing or cleaning the watch.

7. Shock, Magnetism, and Temperature

Quartz GMT movements are well suited to travel and active use.

  • Avoid hard drops onto stone or concrete
  • Avoid repeated heavy impacts
  • Avoid prolonged close exposure to strong magnetic sources

Quartz regulation is largely immune to everyday magnetism compared to mechanical watches, though sustained close contact with strong magnetic fields should still be avoided.

Extreme temperatures can shorten battery life and accelerate gasket aging.

8. Battery Life, Replacement, and Serviceability

The Ronda 515.24H uses a silver-oxide battery with an expected lifespan of approximately 3–5 years, depending on GMT usage.

As the battery nears depletion, you may observe:

  • Irregular seconds-hand movement
  • Intermittent stopping
  • Complete stoppage

These are normal indicators of battery depletion.

All G2 watches use a screw-down, gasket-sealed caseback. While battery replacement is technically possible for owners, professional service is recommended to ensure:

  • Proper gasket reseating
  • Preservation of water resistance
  • Optional pressure testing after service

Vaer offers in-house service and supports long-term ownership through its Pre-Owned Buy-Back Program.

9. Long-Term Ownership Philosophy

The G2 represents Vaer’s most travel-oriented quartz platform: accurate, durable, and assembled in the United States.

With periodic battery replacement and sensible care, a Swiss quartz GMT movement can deliver multi-decade service life. The G2 is designed to be worn daily, traveled hard, serviced when needed, and kept long-term.
