A Southern Cattleman

Nathan Smothers is a fourth-generation cattle rancher, born and raised in the heart of Central Florida—an unexpected stronghold of American cowboy tradition. In a state more often associated with theme parks and coastlines, Nathan’s world is one of swamps, oak hammocks, and open pasture, where cattle still outnumber condos and tourists.

This short film follows Nathan through a day in the life on his family ranch in Bartow, Florida—capturing the rhythm of real ranch work, the challenges of land conservation, and the fading but still fierce culture of the Florida cowboy. From checking fence lines to delivering calves, Nathan’s approach is grounded in a belief that hard work, stewardship, and sacrifice still matter—even when results may be years in the making.

For Nathan, gear isn’t about appearance. It’s about trust. Whether he's waist-deep in a swamp, repairing a broken post, or heading out before sunrise to check on the herd, every tool he carries has a purpose—including his watch. His Vaer isn’t an accessory—it’s part of his daily uniform. Built to endure sweat, rain, and the rough terrain of ranch life, it keeps time the way ranching does: quietly, reliably, and with a deep respect for tradition.

"It’s not about comfort—it’s about doing the hard thing, every day, and doing it well."
